This medicine is not right for everyone. Do not use it if you had an allergic reaction to maribavir.How to Use This Medicine:
Tablet
- Your doctor will tell you how much medicine to use. Do not use more than directed.
- If you are unable to swallow the tablet whole:
- You may break apart or crush the tablets and mix with drinking water. Do not use any other liquid.
- Ask your doctor how much water you will need for your dose.
- Gently swirl the container and swallow the mixture right away.
- Rinse the container with 15 mL of drinking water and swallow the mixture. Repeat this step until no pieces of tablet are left in the container.
- You may also give the medicine through a nasogastric tube or orogastric tube:
- Place 2 tablets into the syringe and add 30 mL of drinking water.
- Shake the syringe well for about 30 to 45 seconds or until the tablets are completely dispersed.
- Give the mixture right away into the feeding tube.
- Add 15 mL of drinking water into the same syringe and flush through the tube. Repeat this step until no pieces of tablet are left in the syringe.
- Read and follow the patient instructions that come with this medicine. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
- Missed dose: Take a dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then and take a regular dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
- Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. You may store the mixture for up to 8 hours.
Drugs and Foods to Avoid:
Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.
- Do not use this medicine together with ganciclovir or valganciclovir.
- Some medicines can affect how maribavir works. Tell your doctor if you are using carbamazepine, cyclosporine, digoxin, everolimus, phenobarbital, phenytoin, rifabutin, rifampin, rosuvastatin, sirolimus, tacrolimus, or St John's wort.
Warnings While Using This Medicine:
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have kidney disease or liver disease.
- Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.
- Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.
Possible Side Effects While Using This Medicine:
Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:
- Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:
- Change in taste
- Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
- Tiredness or weakness
