Secnidazole (sek-NID-a-zole)

Treats vaginal infection caused by bacteria and trichomoniasis (an infection of the sex organs in men or women caused by protozoa).

When This Medicine Should Not Be Used:

How to Use This Medicine:

Granule

• Your doctor will tell you how much medicine to use. Do not use more than directed.
• Sprinkle the granules on soft food (including applesauce, yogurt, or pudding). Swallow the mixture within 30 minutes without chewing or crunching the granules. You may drink a glass of water to help you swallow. Do not dissolve the granules in any liquid.
• Take all of the medicine in your prescription to clear up your infection, even if you feel better after the first few doses.
• Read and follow the patient instructions that come with this medicine. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
• Missed dose: Take a dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then and take a regular dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
• Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.

Drugs and Foods to Avoid:

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

• Do not drink alcohol during treatment and for at least 2 days after the last dose.

Warnings While Using This Medicine:

• Tell your doctor if you are pregnant.
• Your doctor may tell you to stop breastfeeding, and pump and discard your breast milk for at least 4 days (96 hours) after treatment with this medicine.
• This medicine can cause the following problems:
  • Increased risk for vaginal yeast infection
  • Possible risk for cancer (with long-term use)
• Trichomoniasis treatment: Your doctor may want to treat your sexual partner, even if he or she has no symptoms. Use a condom during sexual intercourse. These measures will help keep you from getting the infection again from your partner. If you have any questions, ask your doctor.
• Your doctor will check your progress and the effects of this medicine at regular visits. Keep all appointments.
• Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.

Possible Side Effects While Using This Medicine:

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

• Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
• Unusual bleeding, bruising, or weakness
• Vaginal discharge and itching

If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:

• Change in taste, loss of taste
• Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain
• Headache
