Abciximab (ab-SIX-i-mab)

Prevents blood clots from forming during a procedure to open blocked blood vessels.

When This Medicine Should Not Be Used:

This medicine is not right for everyone. Do not use it if you had an allergic reaction to abciximab or to murine proteins. Do not use it if you had internal bleeding, major surgery, or an injury within the last 6 weeks, or you used a blood thinner such as warfarin within the past week. Do not use it if you have a history of bleeding problems, stroke, cancer, very high blood pressure, or vasculitis.

How to Use This Medicine:

Injectable

• Your doctor will prescribe your dose and schedule. This medicine is given through a needle placed in a vein.
• A nurse or other health provider will give you this medicine.
• You will get a dose of the medicine before your procedure and will continue to receive the medicine for about 12 hours after.

Drugs and Foods to Avoid:

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

• Some medicines can affect how abciximab works. Tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following:
  • A blood thinner, such as warfarin
  • Dipyridamole
  • Pain or arthritis medicine (such as aspirin, diclofenac, etodolac, ibuprofen, indomethacin)
  • Thrombolytic medicine, such as alteplase or streptokinase
  • Ticlopidine

Warnings While Using This Medicine:

• Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• This medicine may cause you to bleed more easily for up to 3 days.
• You will need to stay in bed for several hours after you receive this medicine.
• Tell your doctor if you have received abciximab before.

Possible Side Effects While Using This Medicine:

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

• Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
• Blood in your urine, or bloody or black, tarry stools
• Unusual bleeding or bruising, especially where the IV needle or catheter was placed
• Vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds

If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:

• Back pain
• Lightheadedness or fainting

If you notice other side effects that you think are caused by this medicine, tell your doctor
