Sirolimus (On the skin)

Treats angiofibroma on the face caused by tuberous sclerosis.

When This Medicine Should Not Be Used:

This medicine is not right for everyone. Do not use it if you had an allergic reaction to sirolimus.

How to Use This Medicine:

Gel/Jelly

  • Your doctor will tell you how much medicine to use. Do not use more than directed.
  • Use this medicine only on your skin. Rinse it off right away if it gets on a cut or scrape. Do not get the medicine in your eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water before and after you use this medicine.
  • Apply a thin layer of the medicine to the affected area. Rub it in gently.
  • Do not cover the treated area with a bandage unless directed by your doctor.
  • Read and follow the patient instructions that come with this medicine. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
  • Missed dose: Apply a dose as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then and apply a regular dose. Do not apply extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
  • Store in the refrigerator. Protect from light.

Drugs and Foods to Avoid:

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • This medicine may interfere with vaccines. Ask your doctor before you get a flu shot or any other vaccines.

Warnings While Using This Medicine:

  • It is not safe to take this medicine during pregnancy. It could harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant. Use an effective form of birth control during treatment and for at least 12 weeks after the last dose.
  • Do not breastfeed during treatment with this medicine.
  • Do not use this medicine to treat a skin problem your doctor has not examined. Tell your doctor if you have skin infection at the affected areas.
  • Tell your doctor if you have high cholesterol.
  • This medicine may cause the following problems:
    • Serious infections, including progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML)
    • Increased risk of cancer, including lymphoma and skin cancer
    • Lung or breathing problems, including interstitial lung disease, pneumonitis, pulmonary fibrosis
  • This medicine may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Wear sunscreen. Do not use sunlamps or tanning beds. Wear protective clothing, including a hat and sunglasses.
  • This medicine could cause infertility. Talk with your doctor before using this medicine if you plan to have children.
  • Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they get worse.
  • Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.
  • Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.

Possible Side Effects While Using This Medicine:

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
  • Blemishes on the skin, pimples, dry skin
  • Blistering, peeling, red skin rash
  • Burning, itching, redness, or stinging of the skin
  • Chest pain, trouble breathing
  • Confusion, weakness, seizures, problems with thinking or walking
  • Redness of the eye
  • Sores, reddish patch or irritated area, shiny bump, or pink growth on the skin
