Amino acids (By injection)

Amino Acids (a-MEE-noe AS-ids), Sodium Acetate (SOE-dee-um AS-e-tate), Sodium Chloride (SOE-dee-um KLOR-ide)

Used for nutritional support of newborn babies (including babies with low birth weight) and children requiring total parenteral nutrition (TPN). Treats negative nitrogen balance in the blood. Also used to provide a more complete profile of amino acids for protein synthesis.

When This Medicine Should Not Be Used:

This medicine is not right for everyone. You should not receive it if you or your child had an allergic reaction to any amino acids, or if you or your child have an inborn error for amino acid metabolism, untreated anuria (unable to pass urine), or coma caused by severe liver disease.

How to Use This Medicine:

Injectable

  • This medicine is added to your or your baby's TPN bag. After mixing, it is given through a needle placed in one of your or your baby's veins.
  • A nurse or other health provider will give you this medicine.

Drugs and Foods to Avoid:

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

Warnings While Using This Medicine:

  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you or your child have kidney disease, liver disease, heart disease, stomach or bowel problems, diabetes, or electrolyte imbalance.
  • This medicine may cause the following problems:
    • Aluminum toxicity
    • Blood clots in the veins
    • Fluid or electrolyte imbalance
    • Hyperammonemia (too much ammonia in your blood), which may damage the brain and can be life-threatening
    • Ketonemia (too much ketones in the blood)
    • Metabolic acidosis (too much acid in your blood)
  • Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.

Possible Side Effects While Using This Medicine:

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
  • Blurred vision, dry mouth, increased hunger or thirst, fruit-like breath odor, stomach pain
  • Confusion, uneven heartbeat, muscle cramps or pain, numbness, tingling, pain, or weakness in the hands or feet, unusual tiredness or weakness
  • Chest pain, trouble breathing
  • Fever, chills, cough, sore throat, body aches
  • Rapid weight gain, swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet
  • Seizures, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, swelling of the face, yellow eyes or skin

If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:

  • Pain, itching, burning, swelling, or a lump under your skin where the needle is placed

If you notice other side effects that you think are caused by this medicine, tell your doctor
