Cocaine Hydrochloride (koe-KANE hye-droe-KLOR-ide)

Numbs the mucous membrane inside the nose before a medical procedure or surgery. This medicine is a local anesthetic.

When This Medicine Should Not Be Used:

This medicine is not right for everyone. You should not receive it if you had an allergic reaction to cocaine or similar medicines, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have a damaged nasal mucosa.

How to Use This Medicine:

Liquid

  • A nurse or other trained health professional will give you this medicine. It will be given as a solution-soaked cotton or rayon pledget, where it will be inserted into the nostril before surgery or a medical procedure.

Drugs and Foods to Avoid:

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • Some medicines can affect how cocaine hydrochloride works. Tell your doctor if you are using any of the following:
    • Disulfiram, echothiophate, epinephrine, neostigmine, phenylephrine, reserpine
    • Birth control pills
    • Cancer medicines (including cyclophosphamide, thiotepa)
    • CNS stimulants (including caffeine)
    • Glucocorticoids
    • Medicine to treat depression (including MAO inhibitors, TCAs)

Warnings While Using This Medicine:

  • It is not safe to take this medicine during pregnancy. It could harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant.
  • Your doctor may tell you to stop breastfeeding, and pump and discard your breast milk for 48 hours after you receive this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease, or a history of heart attack, heart or blood vessel disease, heart failure, heart rhythm problems, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or seizures.
  • This medicine may cause the following problems:
    • Increase risk for seizures
    • High blood pressure, heart rhythm problems, or heart attack
  • This medicine may be habit-forming. Tell your doctor if you feel like the nasal area is not numb enough or if the nasal solution is not working well.
  • Cocaine and its products can be detected in the blood and urine at least 1 week after its last dose.
  • This medicine may cause changes in a woman's menstrual cycle and may reduce ovulation, which can lead to fertility problems. Talk to your doctor if you have concerns.
  • Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.

Possible Side Effects While Using This Medicine:

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
  • Blurred vision, dizziness, headache
  • Chest pain that may spread to your arms, jaw, back, or neck, trouble breathing, nausea, unusual sweating, fainting
  • Fast, slow, pounding, or uneven heartbeat
  • Seizures

If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:

  • Pain, itching, burning, or swelling of the nostril where the solution-soaked cotton or rayon pledget is placed
