Nadolol/bendroflumethiazide (By mouth)

Bendroflumethiazide (ben-droe-floo-me-THYE-a-zide), Nadolol (NAY-doe-lol)

Treats high blood pressure. This medicine is a combination of beta-blocker and a diuretic (water pill).

When This Medicine Should Not Be Used:

This medicine is not right for everyone. Do not use it if you had an allergic reaction to nadolol, bendroflumethiazide, or sulfa drugs, if you cannot pass urine, or if you have asthma or certain blood circulation or heart problems. Ask your doctor about these problems.

How to Use This Medicine:

Tablet

  • Take your medicine as directed. Your dose may need to be changed several times to find what works best for you.
  • Swallow the tablet whole. Do not crush, break, or chew it.
  • Missed dose: Take a dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then and take a regular dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
  • Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.

Drugs and Foods to Avoid:

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • Some foods and medicines can affect how nadolol/bendroflumethiazide works. Tell your doctor if you use the following:
    • Amphotericin B, diazoxide, digoxin, lithium salts, methenamine, norepinephrine, probenecid, reserpine, sulfinpyrazone
    • Blood thinner (including warfarin)
    • Insulin or diabetes medicine
    • MAO inhibitor (MAOI)
    • NSAIDs (including aspirin, diclofenac, indomethacin, naproxen)
    • Other blood pressure medicine
    • Steroid medicine
  • If you are also taking cholestyramine or colestipol, take Corzide® at least 1 hour before or 4 to 6 hours after these medicines.
  • Ask your doctor before you use medicines, supplements, or salt substitutes that contain potassium.
  • Alcohol, narcotic pain relievers, or sleeping pills may cause you to feel more lightheaded, dizzy, or faint when used with this medicine.

Warnings While Using This Medicine:

  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have kidney disease, liver disease, heart failure, heart disease, diabetes, gout, lung problems (including chronic bronchitis or emphysema), lupus, electrolyte imbalance, thyroid problems, or a history of allergies or asthma.
  • This medicine may cause the following problems:
    • New or worsening heart failure
    • Eye or vision problems, including glaucoma, myopia
    • Low blood sugar
    • High uric acid in the blood
    • Parathyroid gland problems
  • Do not stop using this medicine suddenly without asking your doctor, or you could develop life-threatening heart problems.
  • Tell any doctor or dentist who treats you knows that you are using this medicine, especially before you have any type of surgery.
  • Tell any doctor or dentist who treats you that you are using this medicine. This medicine may affect certain medical test results.
  • Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.
  • Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.

Possible Side Effects While Using This Medicine:

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
  • Chest pain that may spread, unusual sweating, fainting
  • Confusion, weakness, muscle twitching
  • Dry mouth, increased thirst, muscle cramps
  • Lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting
  • Slow, fast, pounding, or uneven heartbeat
  • Sudden and severe stomach pain, nausea, or vomiting
  • Swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet, rapid weight gain
  • Trouble breathing, cold sweat, or bluish-colored skin
  • Unusual tiredness or weakness, restlessness

If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:

  • Diarrhea, constipation, loss of appetite, stomach upset

If you notice other side effects that you think are caused by this medicine, tell your doctor
