Measles, mumps, and rubella virus vaccine, live (By injection)

When This Medicine Should Not Be Used:

This medicine is not right for everyone. You should not receive it if you had an allergic reaction to measles, mumps, and rubella virus vaccine, if you are pregnant, or if you have severe immune system problems.

How to Use This Medicine:

Injectable

  • A nurse or other trained health professional will give your child this vaccine. It is given as a shot under your skin (usually in the thighs) or into one of your muscles.
  • A nurse or other health provider will give you this medicine.
  • This vaccine is given in 2 doses. First dose is given at 12 to 15 months of age, while the second dose is given at 4 to 6 years of age.
  • If you have received 1 dose of another authorized or approved measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine, you may receive a second dose of this vaccine to complete your vaccination series.
  • Missed dose: It is important to receive this vaccine at the proper time. Try to keep all scheduled appointments. If this vaccine is not given on time, 2 doses will be given at least 4 weeks apart.

Drugs and Foods to Avoid:

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • Talk to your doctor before you get any live virus vaccines while you are receiving this medicine. Some vaccines may not work as well while you are receiving this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you had any blood transfusions or received immune globulin.

Warnings While Using This Medicine:

  • Do not become pregnant for 1 month after receiving this vaccine without first checking with your doctor. There is a chance that this vaccine may cause problems during pregnancy.
  • Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding, or if you have immune system problems.
  • This vaccine may not protect everyone who receives it. This vaccine will not treat symptoms of measles, mumps, or rubella infection if you already have the disease.
  • This medicine may make you bleed, bruise, or get infections more easily. Take precautions to prevent illness and injury. Wash your hands often.
  • The tip caps of the prefilled syringe contains dry natural rubber (a derivative of latex), which may cause allergic reactions in people who are sensitive to latex. Tell your doctor if you have a latex allergy before receiving this medicine.
  • Tell any doctor or dentist who treats you that you are using this medicine. This medicine may affect certain medical test results.

Possible Side Effects While Using This Medicine:

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
  • Fainting
  • High fever, seizures
  • Unusual bleeding, bruising, or weakness

If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:

  • Irritability
  • Loss of appetite
  • Pain, redness, or swelling where the shot was given
  • Sleepiness

If you notice other side effects that you think are caused by this medicine, tell your doctor
