Results from the 2002 National Survey of Family Growth in the US indicate that use of contraception is virtually universal. Ninety-eight percent of all women who have ever had intercourse have used at least one method of contraception. The typical American woman is fertile for about 40 years of her life. And without any form of contraception, the typical pregnancy rate is approximately 90% per year with frequent and unprotected sex. Couples who do not wish to have children may select from a wide range of contraceptive methods to prevent pregnancy.
