Although lifestyle modifications are a necessary part of treating type 2 diabetes, delaying pharmacologic treatment may not always be appropriate, since lifestyle modifications alone may be insufficient to manage glucose levels.

Treatment of diabetes includes non-pharmacologic interventions, such as lifestyle changes, or bariatric surgery, and pharmacologic interventions, that is, drugs that lower glucose levels. Diabetes management is complex and involves more than just the control of hyperglycaemia. According to standards of diabetes care issued by ADA, patients with diabetes should be treated by a physician-led head care team that may include other physicians, nurses, dieticians, mental health professionals, and pharmacists.
